The Walkmen – “In The New Year”
It wasn’t but 2 months ago when I was reading the heart breaking news that The Walkmen, one of the most consistently great bands of the last 10 years, was going on indefinite hiatus. Sad, but inevitable – all good things must come to an end.
Nothing happened. We’re not going to play shows for a long time, but there’s no reason why we can’t again. People just sort of fade away a little bit. We’re all friends. We built this thing that’s still there.”
Then this morning, I wake up to read that The Walkmen, the same band who “wasn’t going to play any shows for a long time,” is going to “reunite” for a charity gig in New Orleans. The event is being put on by Rock On Foundation, an organization founded by Matt Bonner of the San Antonio Spurs. The show is being billed as an Alt-Star Party and will also feature the Lost Bayou Rambler and a Chris Tomson (of Vampire Weekend) DJ set.
We thought it might take a lifetime to get us back together–til the Alt-Star Party gave us the nod. How could we stay on the bench? We’re coming 110%. Full-court press. Man to man. Rock n Roll, Pick n Roll.”
Whatever the reason for the band reuniting (love of music, love of basketball, love of money), we’re happy to have them back…for now. It’s a New Year, it’s a New You.
